In Iran, at the holy city of Qom in particular, the month of Muharram is of great importance to Shia Muslims as they commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (PBUH) and his 72 companions.

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic New Year and is marked by mourning rituals that last for ten nights.

These rituals are observed not only in Iran but also in other parts of the world where there are Shia Muslims.

During Muharram, cities and towns in Iran undergo a significant transformation as streets are adorned with black flags and banners.
People also dress in black or dark colors as a symbol of their grief. The mourning ceremonies culminate on Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram, which is one of the most significant events in Iran.

The Battle of Karbala, where Imam Hussein was martyred by the forces of the second Umayyad caliph, took place on Muharram 10th in the year AD 680/AH 61.

This event holds deep historical and religious significance for Shia Muslims. Overall, Muharram is a solemn month for Shia Muslims in Iran and around the world, as they remember and mourn the sacrifice of Imam Hussein and his loyal companions.
